Sáráhkká is the goddess of pregnancy and childbirth in Sámi religion. She plays a central role in conception and delivery, and was one of the divine beings closest to Sámi daily life.

The woman's position as a bearer of tradition is strong in Sámi culture, as it is the woman who passes down the joik, and therefore the language, to future generations through their joik to newborn children. Through the Sáráhkká project, the Sámi woman's voice and history will be heard, and traditional joiks from different areas of Sápmi will be highlighted.
