The performance is based on the play Gutten og gullfuglen (The Boy and the Golden Bird), originally written by Nils Utsi, Tone Danielsen and Sigmund Sæverud, which had its premiere at Hålogaland Teater in 1972. Beaivváš staged the play for the first time in 1984, and it has since been shown in several different versions. The play is now presented in a new 2026 version, with adaptations made by director Sara Margrethe Oskal and dramaturg Rawdna Carita Eira.
