Kåfjord Municipality, through the project «The Sámi Patient», in collaboration with the Centre for Northern Peoples, is organising a history seminar on the Norwegianisation policies, the war, and the revitalisation of Sámi language and culture in Kåfjord.
The authorities' harsh Norwegianisation policy had major consequences for ethnic diversity in Kåfjord. The post-World War II reconstruction effectively meant the end of the road for Sami and Kven languages and culture, with Norwegian seen as the ticket to the future. We have invited speakers who can tell us about the time before and after Norwegianisation, and contemporary witnesses who have felt its consequences.
In the project «The Sami Patient,» the aim is to increase cultural understanding and knowledge among healthcare professionals who will provide health and care services to the Sami population, so that they are aware of the impacts that Sami culture and background can have on the individual.
– We hope that the seminar creates pride in the cultural affiliation in Kåfjord, and starts a thought process for the continued work on the project, says project manager for «The Sámi Patient» Lisa Mo.
Those who cannot physically attend the centre can still follow the seminar, which will be streamed from the Centre for Northern Peoples. Facebook and YouTube Channel.
Due to the coronavirus situation, we can only accommodate 50 participants at the seminar. It's first come, first served!
