The exhibition Decolonisation and revitalisation in S\u00e1pmi. Ola R\u00f8e photographs 1979-2019 <\/em>deals with the contemporary history of S\u00e1pmi. This is a documentation of the cultural-political development in S\u00e1mi communities, which started with the Alta struggle in the 1970s and resulted in the strengthening of the S\u00e1mi's status as a people. This also marked the beginning of decolonisation in S\u00e1mi communities, which continues today.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project is a collaboration between photographer Ola R\u00f8e, who has played a key role in documenting this important period in contemporary Sami history, anthropologist and cultural producer Jorunn Eikjok, who has been active in Sami cultural development, and Davvi \u00e1lbmogiid guovdd\u00e1\u0161\/Centre for Northern Peoples. The exhibition begins with Altakampen, then Beaivv\u00e1\u0161 Sami National Theatre, Masigruppa, Riddu Ri\u0111\u0111u, Heini Wesslin and finally Nils Aslak Valkeap\u00e1\u00e1 - \u00c1illoha\u0161.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2013 I made Sami friends when I studied in Troms\u00f8 in the 1970s. I often sat with them in \u00abthe Sami corner\u00bb at Prelaten kro. I also went to Sami parties with them. <\/em>This is what photographer Ola R\u00f8e has to say about how he got to know S\u00e1pmi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ola R\u00f8e's photographic work has been in the most eventful time in S\u00e1pmi. The exhibition is a documentation of the new era in S\u00e1mi society. It starts with the Alta struggle, which resulted in the Sami's status as a people in Norway being strengthened. This also marked the beginning of decolonisation and revitalisation in earnest, with the flourishing of Sami culture. The Sami wanted to get rid of colonisation and revive their own culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

- I moved to Guovdageaidnu-Kautokeino in the 1980s and lived there for a few years. There I also collaborated with photographer Harry Johansen, who is Sami.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Photographer Ola R\u00f8e is from Ski, outside Oslo. He has lived in the north since 1976. Ola is an organic farmer and photographer. He lives on Selnes farm in Balsfjord, with his family and many kinds of animals. He began his career as a photographer in 1979, shortly after graduating as a teacher from Troms\u00f8 Teacher Training College. He travelled to Alta to cover the fight against the development of the Alta-Kautokeino waterway. He worked as a freelancer for the newspaper Nordlys in Troms\u00f8.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Until the early 1990s, he was a regular freelance photographer for Dagbladet in Oslo, based in Troms\u00f8. He covered all kinds of news from Northern Norway that could be of national interest - as seen from Oslo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From 1979 to 2016, H\u00e5logaland Theatre - HT was his most important client. There he took press, programme and poster photos. He photographed almost all of HT's performances for 30 years, approximately 230 theatre performances. He has also photographed several performances for Beaivv\u00e1\u0161 S\u00e1mi te\u00e1hter in Guovdageaidnu. He has also photographed for Stellaris Dance Theatre in Hammerfest and Sampo Theatre in Kirkenes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the years, Ola has worked extensively throughout S\u00e1pmi, with S\u00e1mi journalists and cultural workers. He has exhibited photographs on various themes, such as the everyday life of oil workers, the northern lights, northern Norwegian landscapes and light. In the 1990s, he produced the multimedia show \u201cNorthern Norway in eight seasons\u201d. It was presented at conferences and cultural events in Norway and abroad, with live cello and joik.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He has several times participated as a photographer in the spring migration of reindeer from the Finnmark plateau to the coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1998, Ola began collaborating with Jorunn Eikjok, a social anthropologist and cultural producer. Since then, they have created several exhibitions with themes from S\u00e1pmi. In autumn 2013, their book \u201dNine Sami contemporary images\u201d<\/em> published by \u010c\u00e1lliidL\u00e1g\u00e1dus - ForfatternesForlag. The book was published in North Sami \u201dOvcci s\u00e1mi \u00e1igegova\u201d<\/em>, in Norwegian \u201dNine Sami contemporary images<\/em>\u201d and in English \u201dSami Images in Modern Times<\/em>\u201d. The exhibition \u201d11 s\u00e1mi \u00e1igegova\u201d - \u201dEleven Sami Images in Modern Times\u201d - \u201dElleve samiske tidsbilder<\/em>\u201d opened in 2017 as a permanent exhibition at the Museum of Cultural History in Oslo. Since then, they have made a documentary and exhibition about traditional Sami knowledge, \u201c\u00c1rbediehtu - S\u00e1mi agriculture, sheep farming and outdoor industries\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
