The exhibition showcases 50 works from Danish artist Gitz-Johansen's (1897-1977) diverse oeuvre and illustrates his love for S\u00e1pmi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The artist travelled 23 times in S\u00e1pmi from 1950 until his death in 1977. The exhibition is a selection from the art collection at RDM-Samisk Kunstmagasin in Karasjok, and produced by RiddoDuottarMuseat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The annual Jokkmokk market became the starting point for a several-week stay each year, where he also drew sketches, and in 1958 he designed the official poster for the winter market in Jokkmokk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gitz-Johansen also travelled to Greenland in 1933 to draw and paint, at the urging of polar explorer Knud Rasmussen. His last trip to Greenland was in 1949.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gitz-Johansen has illustrated many books, made jewellery, textiles, posters and more.
He is represented at the National Gallery of Denmark in Copenhagen, the Royal Danish Collection of Prints and Drawings, the National Museum in Copenhagen, the National History Museum at Frederiksborg in Denmark and almost every museum in Greenland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exhibition is open until 22 February 2019<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
