Welcome to the opening of the exhibition -Like shavings on the sea - Stories about the Birtavarre mines<\/em> Friday 20 April. The exhibition runs until 29 June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2013like shavings on the sea<\/em>, was the statement from a miner who worked at the Birtavarre mines. He was referring to the situation the workers found themselves in when Verket went bankrupt, and many of them drifted around Birtavarre without any form of support or help. We open with lectures by local historian and author Torleif Lyngstad and author and journalist John Gustavsen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exhibition -like shavings on the sea-. Stories about Birtavarre Mines is a collaboration with artist and author Odd Marakatt Sivertsen<\/a>, from Olderdalen and Davvi \u00e1lbmogiid guovdd\u00e1\u0161\/ Centre for Northern Peoples - D\u00e1l\u00e1 \u00e1iggi musea\/ Contemporary Museum. The exhibition's themes are visualised through photography and Sivertsen's paintings, which are based on historical photographic material and his presence in the old mining area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exhibition project highlights one aspect of K\u00e5fjord's recent history, which deals with how social events and external influences have contributed to upheavals and changes in our areas. The Birtavarre mine, also known as Verket, has a central place in K\u00e5fjord's recent history, yet the history of mining is rarely emphasised in our narratives. The mining industry, which lasted for a period of 20 years, from 1898 to 1919, was epoch-making for social development, particularly in the centre of K\u00e5fjord, and had a major impact on the local community, socially, commercially and culturally. This is also the story of a sometimes dramatic interplay of human destinies and resources, and leads into small, northern Norwegian communities' stories of powerlessness and hopes, growth and decline. However, at the same time as the mining experience, a dawning self-awareness also emerged among people who were promised new times, if only they understood how to subordinate themselves to the elite groups of the dominant society. The effects of mining on local communities, environmental destruction and labour struggles were put on the agenda of the local population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What did such changes mean socially, culturally and politically for the local population and the culture of a small community in vulnerable natural areas? The exhibition can also shed light on what mining and other natural interventions in the High North mean for small S\u00e1mi communities today, and provide a greater understanding of how the histories of Norwegianisation and the struggle for rights play a role in the present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
