Hans debutbok&nbsp;<em>Sanger fra en tundra<\/em>&nbsp;(1957) ble godt mottatt av anmelderne i norsk presse. Diktene sl\u00e5r an tonen for det framtidige forfatterskapet med fokus p\u00e5 natur, folk og kultur p\u00e5 Nordkalotten. 1970 kom&nbsp;<em>Korstog mot Kautokeino,&nbsp;<\/em>en dokumentarroman av samenes oppr\u00f8r mot \u00f8vrighet og sosial urettferdighet. Oppr\u00f8ret kulminerte i et blodig religi\u00f8st oppgj\u00f8r i Kautokeino h\u00f8sten 1852. Hovedverket i Kristiansens forfatterskap er det romanserien&nbsp;<em>Kornet og fiskene<\/em>&nbsp;i fire bind, med utgangspunkt i den finske utvandringen til Finnmark og Nord-Troms i siste halvdel av 1800-tallet grunnet. Serien vakte b\u00e5de stor begeistring og intens debatt i sin samtid. For de to f\u00f8rste b\u00f8kene i serien \u2013&nbsp;<em>Svanevinger i nord&nbsp;<\/em>(1978) og&nbsp;<em>Den salte \u00e5keren<\/em>&nbsp;(1979) \u2013 fikk han Aschehoug-prisen i 1980, og samme \u00e5r ble han nominert til Nordisk r\u00e5ds litteraturpris 1981 for&nbsp;<em>Stiene f\u00f8rer til havet<\/em>&nbsp;(1980).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I utstillingen m\u00f8ter vi i tillegg&nbsp;maleren, lyrikeren, l\u00e6reren, journalisten og&nbsp;samfunnsdebattanten. Idar Kristiansen var en produktiv, engasjert og mangesidig kunster.
