Few people know the nature of North Troms like photographer Jan R. Olsen from Olderdalen in Kåfjord. His camera has been his companion since he was a child, and in summer and winter he has hunted for the magical light in the north. This has resulted in several awards and honourable mentions for the nature-loving photographer.

- "The camera has inspired me to get out and about. It's with me on hikes and skiing trips, and when I'm cycling or hiking," says Olsen.

The Centre for Northern Peoples is proud to be the first to present excerpts from his work through an exhibition in our gallery.

- I'm fascinated by the landscape and the light here in the north. That's why I spend a lot of time outside when the light is at its best, morning and evening. But when the light isn't at its best, I think black and white and look for shapes and contrasts. These are the images I've chosen for this exhibition, which is the first I've had," says Olsen.

Olsen's photographs have also resulted in several book publications that convey our beautiful and contrasting landscape. This year also saw the 25th edition of the Nord-Troms calendar with his photos.

In 2016, Olsen made the short film Polar Night, in which he conveys the darkness in the north through 11 minutes. The film has received a lot of attention and has been shared countless times on social media.
