Good morning is a meeting between Norwegian folk music and South Sámi joik. The band's two frontwomen are Marja Mortensson, who has her background in South and Ume Sámi joik tradition, and Hilde Fjerdingøy, with a background in traditional music from Helgeland in Nordland.
The musicians in Moenje compose instrumental tunes and joiks which are performed alongside traditional material.
Good morning This means clear weather. The music and arrangements carry both clarity and simplicity, but also a good dose of grey weather and complexity. Here, you'll encounter music that stands out from what we're used to – it's not often you hear music like this on the radio, to put it simply. Moenje emphasises the rough rhythms and distinctive tonality found in the traditional material, and here there are certain similarities between the pols dance tradition in Helgeland and joik. It can feel as though it's built on melodic and rhythmic phrases that don't necessarily adhere to a fixed pulse, which results in fun and exciting melodies.
Good morning ble started in spring 2016 at Riksscenen in Oslo, in cooperation with Folkemusikk Nord, and has since been on several tours in Northern Norway and Svalbard under the auspices of Folkemusikk Nord. The general manager at Riksscenen, Helge Skansen, stated after the premiere to Moenje: «The group Moenje was formed through Riksscenen's Folk Sessions project and made its debut at Folkelarm 2016. It was a great positive experience and perhaps one of the finest encounters we have facilitated between Norwegian folk music and Sámi singing traditions. Highly recommended.»
In spring 2019, they released the album «Klarvær» (Kirkelig Kulturverksted), which has garnered positive reviews in national media and abroad.
