Læstadianismens historie i Norge

The history of Laestadianism in Norway

14. October 2024

Centre for Northern Peoples 14 November at 6pm!

The Laestadian revival movement arose in the Swedish Lapland around the priest Lars Levi Læstadius in the mid-19th century.

Three researchers at UiT The Arctic University of Norway; Bengt-Ove Andreassen, Rolf Inge Larsen and Roald E. Kristiansen have been researching Laestadianism for several years. This resulted in the first comprehensive presentation of a religious movement that has left its mark on people and our local communities over several centuries. The book The history of Laestadianism in Norway was published by Orkana Akademisk forlag in 2024.
One of the authors, Rolf Inge Larsen, will be joining us to talk about how Laestadianism spread in Norway in the latter half of the 19th century, underwent splits and continued in various groups right up to the present day.

Particular emphasis will be placed on Laestadianism in our areas.
