Bear Tracks 2024

24. April 2024 by Isak Kvitfjell

The temporary exhibition Bear Tracks

Bear tracks is an exhibition about bears and people in North Troms over 5,000 years. The exhibition has been created by Nord-Troms museum in collaboration with Goržži mánáidgárdi/Fossen kindergarten.
The bear has always fascinated us humans. It has been feared, but also deeply respected, and it has inspired countless tales and myths. In this exhibition, we see how bears and humans have lived side by side in Nord-Troms for 5,000 years. The exhibition is divided into two parts, where one part is made by the children at Goržži Mánáidgárdi/Fossen kindergarten. They have brought the bear to life through many different illustrations. The children have painted, drawn and engraved elements from the bear, and shown how unique the bear is. The exhibition was opened on 6 February 2024, at the same time as the base exhibition was opened.

The second part of the exhibition is about the bear. Here you can read about the bear in ancient Sami belief, about the symbolism of the runic bomb and the interaction between our world and the spiritual world. Furthermore, it is told about the rock carvings of the bear and how we as humans have lived side by side with The Big Brown. Here you can also learn about where the teddy bear comes from. Stories about the bear are diverse, but one thing is certain, and that is that the bear is a highly respected animal. So if there’s one exhibition you should see, it’s this one. Here you will learn about The Big Brown, The Thick Haired One, The Turf.
